The Story

This innovative product wasn’t developed in a lab or some sterile environment. The idea for the Fishing Rod Retainer started out in the real world – on a normal day of fishing with family, where things are always bound to be a little unpredictable.

FRR’s founder, Shane Quinn, was headed out to the dock at a Wisconsin lake with his two young children. The kids ran out ahead, excited to drown a few worms. Shane followed, harshly toting four rods in one hand and a tackle box in the other. After returning from a second trip to the shed to collect worms, corn and snacks, Shane reached the dock to find a typical scenario: fishing lines already tangled, while the kids bounced around in excitement.

It took several aggravating minutes to untangle the lines, a common frustration for anglers. Eventually, the lines were ready for fishing. Sure enough, the afternoon bite was slow and the kids were ready for swimming.

That was when the real headache began.

The rods, left on the dock, were leaning against the nearby pontoon. While swimming with the kids, Shane watched as a chop on the lake began to rock the pontoon. The rods that seemed secure one moment were now perilously rocking with the waves. One rod ended up in the lake. The others slammed back onto the dock.

It got worse.

The family’s dogs heard the excitement in the water and came running down to the dock, where they helped add an extra level of chaos – kicking and further tangling the rods.

It wasn’t the first time Shane had dealt with this kind of pandemonium. He’d seen fingers and toes snagged by hooks caused by haphazardly placed fishing equipment. As Shane repaired the damaged lines, replaced lures and fixed the rods he thought to himself, "There has to be a better way."

The very next weekend, Shane went to the local hardware store and gathered the materials for what would become the prototype for the Fishing Rod Retainer. The original version – created in his garage – might not have been the prettiest, but he realized instantly that it was a problem solver.

Shane discovered how it could store rods vertically, was a perfect rod caddy and could be secured in just about any fishing environment when not in use. And, he learned, it was a pretty cool way to display rods after the gear had been stowed for the season.

Over time, the FRR evolved into what you see here: an efficient product that saves time, lessens frustrations and prevents equipment damage (which saves us all money). It helps make fishing a more enjoyable, safe and hassle-free experience.

We figure you know what we’re talking about and hope it brings back some fond memories of your own … the kind you can finally laugh about now!
